What is Miboflo?

Miboflo is a thermoelectric warming device that is applied externally on the skin of the eyelids for 8-10 minutes per eye. The hand held probe delivers consistent emissive heat to the Meibomian glands at 108 degrees Fahrenheit or 42.2 degrees Celsius. With gentle ocular massage Miboflo softens and mobilizes lipid secretions to create an enhanced tear film. Miboflo is recommended at 3-4 sessions spread 2 weeks apart.

How does Miboflo treat dry eye?

This treatment liquefies the hardened oils within the meibomian glands of the eyelids. Thermal therapeutic treatments like Miboflo aim to melt inspissated meibum to unclog the glands to allow for copious release of oils. The improved quality of expressible of oils from the eyelid glands reduces abnormal tear film evaporation and coats the ocular surface for a healthy lubricated eye.

Who is a candidate?

If you have dry eye and have symptoms of:

  • stinging or burning sensation

  • sandy or grittiness

  • redness

  • fluctuating vision

  • contact lens discomfort

  • difficulty while reading

  • eye fatigue from hours of electronic screen time

Some patients exhibit symptoms of dry eye, while others may remain unaware of their condition. The best way to find out is by booking yourself a routine eye exam and get evaluated. Some symptoms of dryness include tearing, itching, sandy or grittiness sensation, discomfort with contact lenses, redness.

Per clinical studies, dry eye disease is becoming more common within the average patient population. It is affecting as many as 1 in every 4 patients presenting to general eye clinics. Associated risk factors include female sex, electronic device use, contact lens wear, Lasik surgery, autoimmune disease and hormonal dysfunction.
